About Mercury to the Moon

History: In Gagliastro’s fantasy novel Mercury to the Moon, every world from Mercury to Pluto has their own culture, language, and planetary dish. Venus’s planetary dish is called Oddlietti—a high-fiber meal made from the tendrils of an Oddly tree. Oddlies are one of the Fathoms of the Solar System. Fathoms are magical living organisms that are dependent on alien-made force fields. Oddlies have jellyfish-tentacle-like branches called tendrils that, when boiled, can be eaten and served family-style. The roots of an Oddly hold an abundance of wanderlust that, when extracted, can be used in vortexes to warp from planet to planet. Oddlietti, much like Gagliastro, has an Italian root. Gagliastro is proudly Sicilian/Eastern Mediterranean. Whether it’s mainland or the islands, Italy is rich in culture, cuisine, and history. Gagliastro wanted to showcase his Italian side in his own fantastical, delicious way. Inspired by Alouette, the popular French-Canadian lullaby, one of our main characters, Vedrò Azzurro, sings to himself, “Oddlietti, dolce oddlietti. Oddlietti, dormirò bene.”
